CHEESEBOARDS: Tŷ Caws

Owen Davies at Tŷ Caws, Cardiff

If you’re keen to check out some of the best Welsh cheeses around, then a visit to Tŷ Caws in Cardiff should be on your hit list. Located in the city’s historic Castle Arcade, this Cheese Bar offers super stylish surroundings to enjoy some cheese and wine, benefiting from full access to the shop’s carefully curated counter.

Founded by Owen Davies in 2000, Tŷ Caws began with a simple idea, “to share my passion for cheese with the people of Cardiff”. Starting out at markets and online, Owen launched the shop in November 2023, adding the Cheese Bar in October 2024.

Owen explains:

“The Cheese Bar is a space where customers can sit down, relax, and enjoy a sharing platter of cheese paired with a glass of wine. It’s been incredible to see how this space has brought people together and helped put us on the map. For me, Tŷ Caws has always been about more than just selling cheese - it’s about sharing stories, celebrating local producers, and connecting people through food.”

On the board right now… The Welsh Cheese Plate

Hafod, Holden Farm Dairy

This 12-month matured traditional cheddar-style cheese is made at the longest established organic dairy farm in Wales. Grassy, buttery and melt-in-the-mouth.

Trefaldwyn Blue, Trefaldwyn Cheese

Made using organic milk from a third generation dairy farm in Mid Wales, this golden-coloured blue cheese is rich, creamy and tangy. A decidedly moreish blue.

Hiraeth, Tŷ Caws

In 2023, Owen embarked on another exciting chapter, developing two new cheeses at Food Centre Wales using local ewe’s milk. Hiraeth is a creamy and herbaceous brie-style cheese - but also look out for Crwys, a mixed-milk cheese developed in the style of a traditional Welsh farmhouse cheese.

Celtic Promise, Caws Teifi

A Caerphilly style washed-rind cheese with a slightly moist, pink rind. The cheese is savoury and meaty, carrying a fairly pungent aroma which contrasts with its delicate flavour profile.

Accompaniments

All served with Cradoc’s Sea-Salted Crackers, cornichons and balsamic onions.
