CHALLENGE THE CHEESEMONGER: Cheese! Louise
Cheesemongers are the lifeblood of our industry, the link between cheesemakers and customers, so we’ve got our Chedditor-at-Large, Keith Kendrick to tap into their wisdom with another special order.
Louise Bagnall from Cheese! Louise, Hampshire
THE CHALLENGE
“I’m always interested to try cheeses that are local to a cheesemonger, wherever they are in the UK. So I got in touch with Cheese! Louise and asked for her recommendations for cheeses made within a 50-mile radius of her Hampshire shop.”
LOUISE’S RESPONSE
“Locally produced cheese is extra special, with the shared connection to the land on which it is made. We don’t have to travel far to find a beautiful selection of cheese to create a delicious cheese board. Old Winchester, mature like a cheddar, melts into caramel sweetness and a savoury broth finish; Millie, a dairy rich Caerphilly-style cheese, sings of the Jersey milk it is made from; smooth and fruity Spenwood, so delightfully moreish is a great choice for a milk variation; and Smoked Wordsworth offers a tasty additional dimension of flavour and texture.”
THE CHEESES
Old Winchester - Lyburn Farmhouse Cheesemakers
Millie - Cheese on the Wey
Spenwood - Village Maid Cheese
Smoked Wordsworth - Book and Bucket Cheese Co.
OUR CHEDDITOR-AT-LARGE’S VERDICT
“A sublime - and surprising - selection of cheeses. I’ve always had a soft spot for the hard Old Winchester, and the Spenwood is always a winner, but the others were new to me. Each one was a revelation. I’m so pleased, Cheese Louise!”
